ROYALTY 1900 Wrench "Links of Empire" Numbers 1 to 10 for the Royal Visit to Australia, Numbers 5 to 10 posted at the appropriate Australian ports of call, the last "Posted in Melbourne on the day of Opening of the Federal Parliament" but actually one day later, Numbers 1 to 4 cancelled in London MR30/01, a few minor blemishes but fine to very fine. 1901 "Links of Empire" Series for the Royal Visit by the Duke & Duchess of York to Open the First Federal Parliament in Melbourne on 9th May 1901 comprising No 6 (kangaroo), 7 ("Parliament House, Adelaide"), 8 ("Sydney Harbour") & 9 ("Brisbane"), the first with Melbourne cds of 6.5.01, the others with cds of the relevant cities. Very scarce. [See also Lots 204 & 205]
1934 Kisch-Griffin Defence Committee petition card to Attorney-General Robert Menzies demanding release of Egon Kisch & Gerald Griffin jailed "because they could not pass an absurd language test which is not given to all immigrants...", minor blemishes, unused. [This was a major cause célèbre. Kisch was a German Jew & Communist who was invited by private groups to lecture in Australia. He was considered political dynamite, was treated as a criminal & deported on the "Strathaird", from which he jumped overboard, breaking a leg]
ARTIST CARDS: AR BURNETT: c.1906 The Herald "Ten Best Citizens of Victoria" caricatures comprising Chief Justice John Madden, Premier Thomas Bent, former Premiers Sir George Turner & William Irvine, Australia's second Prime Minister Alfred Deakin, Chief Secretary Sir Samuel Gillott, welfare worker Selina Sutherland, social reformer Rev AR Edgar, socialite Janet Lady Clarke & entrepreneur/politician George Coppin, a few minor blemishes but generally very fine unused; also the defective front of the original envelope. [We have dated the cards as c.1906, being the year in which George Coppin died.

PATRIOTISM: 1926 PC Beer Australia Day "Remember the Dardenelles" with vignettes of Sergt ER Larkin MLA & Cammeray Public School (NSW), priced at 3d, a little aged & tiny fault at lower-right, minor blemishes on the address-side, unused. [Kevin Crotty's very fine example sold at the Prestige auction of 8/5/2013 for $575]

Outstanding array of Canberra cards including sketches by A Joyce Bowden of "Acton House...Built by the First Pioneers 1826" & "Duntroon House, Built by Robert Campbell 1829" x2, many real photos including several by RC Strangman with various panoramas of Canberra or Duntroon including a two-panel panoramic card & the War Memorial with nothing else anywhere near it, 1927 (May 9) Opening of Parliament House x3 including photograph of Setting Up the Dais plus others of the Interior, "The Prime Minister's Residence" & "Government House", early Building Works at the University & others of early buildings in the District, "Telopia park school", several of Hotel Canberra plus Hotel Kurrajong and Hotel Wellington, outlying districts with Mount Stromlo Observatory x2, Cotter Dam x11, etc, some with plain backs, mostly unused & generally very fine to superb. pre-1927 selection of real photo types comprising Howard & Shearsby (Yass) 1913 "Singing the Old Hundredth Hymn" at Laying of the Foundation Stone for the New Capital City, four of early buildings at Duntroon Military College - one by Howard & Shearsby - including "Officers Mess" & "Professors' Residences", two panoramas including c.1927 with Parliament House Completed & Early Residential Developments, also Parliament House Under Construction & Completed (Strangman), finally "Bridge on Molonglo river, Canberra", very fine to superb unused. STEREO CARDS: Selection of Rose cards for 1) 1901 Federation Celebrations x7 including Swearing-In Ceremony, Review of Troops, Wool Arch & French Arch etc; and 2) 1908 Visit of the American Fleet x15 including Ships, Official Reception, Fire Brigades Procession, Sailors Marching through Sydney, Children's Flag Drill, etc; some minor blemishes mostly on the backing-cards, the views generally very fine to superb! SUFFRAGETTES/VOTES FOR WOMEN: 1904 Salter's Hall S&L Society two Children's cards overprinted on the address side for a Gentlemen's Evening with Tennyson's verses "The woman's cause is man's: they rise or sink together..." 1) in gold, endorsed "Proof/Limited to 6 copies..." & "The rest will be red ink"; and 2) the promised version in red; unused. A very rare pair. Ex Keith Harrison. [Many men supported the Women's Rights movement, but much male support was lost by ever more provocative acts & escalating violence]
SUFFRAGETTES/VOTES FOR WOMEN: 1908 Rotary real photo card "Mrs Pankhurst and her Daughter, Christabel", unused. Superb! Ex Keith Harrison. [Emmeline Pankhurst is generally regarded as the pre-eminent activist in the Rights for Women Movement. Christabel was her favourite daughter & a close supporter/adviser]

SUFFRAGETTES/VOTES FOR WOMEN: c.1910 real photo cards 1) fantastic shot of nine Marching Suffragettes Wearing Sandwich Boards, very fine unused; 2) "Suffragettes at Home", very fine used in 1913; and & an over-exposed card of two Women (Nurses?) SUFFRAGETTES/VOTES FOR WOMEN: Marvellous group of comic cards many of which are overtly anti-feminist including Felix McGlennon Ltd "Harem-Scare 'Em Girls" set of 6, Donald McGill "The Harem Skirt" & J Miles & Co "Give me a Vote & see what I'll Do!", while others are obviously pro-Women's Rights including five "Votes for Women" types, also Millar & Lang Ltd "Servants' Insurance Act" x3, mostly unused but including from 'ADLINGTON/ CHORLEY' & 'DINAS/RHONDDA ISLAND', generally fine to very fine, Cat £725 minimum. [The background colours of pale green, white & mauve are those of the Women's Social & Political Union. The subject perhaps is a portent of the infamous 1913 "Cat & Mouse Act" that saw female hunger-strikers released to avoid them dying, then being re-arrested on any pretext when they had regained their strength!)
