KING EDWARD VII
1892 (c.?) stampless envelope addressed in the hand of the then Prince of Wales to "The/Right Honourable WE Gladstone/etc etc MP/10 Downing Street", initialled "AE" at lower-left & with embossed '[crown]/ AE /HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE' (= "Evil be to him who thinks evil") on the flap, the cover opened-out for display. [John Williams states that the superimposed initials "EA" stand for Edward & Alexandra. However, the motto is that of the Order of the Garter, so we suggest the letters are more likely "AE" for Albert Edward, which is also consistent with his initials on the face. The cover is undated and as William Ewart Gladstone was Prime Minister on four separate occasions - 1868-1874, 1880-1885, briefly in 1886, and 1892-1894 - it is difficult to ascribe a date. We have taken the conservative view that it is probably later rather than earlier]
