WESTERN AUSTRALIA - Postal History
1873 cover to India with Perf 12½ 6d mauve SG 60 vertical pair tied by light but obvious 15-bar '16' cancels, 'YORK/NO22/1876/=WESTERN-AUSTRALIA=' cds alongside, Bombay transit & Delhi arrival b/s, repaired flap faults. Pope & Reynolds Census #10. Ex Dr Cecil Walkley: acquired for $460. A very scarce destination.
1891 (Feb 5) cover to India "via Singapore" with De La Rue ½d & 2d tied by 'GT'-in-bars, 'GERALDTON/=WA=' cds (#2b), 'SINGAPORE' transit & two different 'CALCUTTA' arrival backstamps, minor blemishes. Pope & Thomas Census #4. Ex Dr Cecil Walkley: acquired for $368. [On 1/1/1891, the overseas rate to all destinations was reduced to 2½d but this lasted for only 2 months! The rate reverted to 6d, until it was again reduced to 2½d on 1/10/1891 when the Australian Colonies joined the UPU. Mail from this brief rate period - especially to unusual destinations - is very elusive]
