C of A - Postal History
1915 (Jan 22) cover to Chile with 4-colour franking of Kangaroos First Wmk ½d 2½d & 4d + KGV 1d paying 2½d x2 + 3d registration tied by Sydney cds, 'SANTIAGO/10MAR15/CERTIFICADOS' arrival b/s & R label on the face, forwarded to 'VALPARAISO' b/s, mss "Non Reclame" (= unclaimed) & returned via Panama & USA with b/s of New York & San Francisco, Sydney DLO arrival b/s of AUG/18/1915 & boxed 'UNCLAIMED' h/s both in rosine, minor soiling. [Absence of transit b/s for the outgoing journey suggests trans-Pacific direct to Chile]
C of A - Flight Covers - Commercial
ARGENTINA: 1931 (June 15) registered cover from Sydney to Buenos Aires endorsed "Per Pan American Airways/ Miami-Cuba-Porto Rico/Argentine/Air Mail" with 2d 3d x2 & Kingsford Smith 6d, New York (11th July) & Miami (9th July) transit b/s & indistinct Buenos Aires arrival, superb 'CERTIFICADOS/258/CENTRAL' h/s on the face. [There was no gazetted rate from Australia until 1934. The rate paid appears to have been 3d foreign letter rate via London (?) to Miami + 8d airmail Miami-Argentina + 3d registration]
BRAZIL: 1940 (Feb 27) bank cover endorsed 'Per China Clipper' with 1d 6d & Kangaroo 2/- x2 tied by 'PERTH/WA' cds, Rio de Janeiro b/s of 20/MAR/40, minor creasing & soiling. The rate of 4/7d (or 4/6d + 1d late fee) doesn't conform to any of the several rates recorded by Breckon and Walker.
MULTIPLE ADVERTISERS MEXICO: 1892 10c advertising lettersheet with numerous box adverts printed in black & red &, on the reverse, instructions in Spanish French & English for use of the form which "...circulate in all countries of the Postal Union..." and "...are sold in all the Post Offices throughout the Mexican Republic...", a statement that borders on the ridiculous; plus the plain envelope with a die-cut oval window at U/R through which the stamp would be cancelled & 'Se vende en/CINCO CENTAVOS/...' (= Sold for 5c) in red on the reverse, unused. Marvellous! [It has often been said that this contrivance was the inspiration for Jonathan Bear's Advertising Envelopes issued in Victoria. Research by Mark Diserio has now shown that not to be the case, though the connection remains irresistible]
