71(2)jaSmooth Paper 1d red Plate 2  being the Die II Substituted Cliché ACSC #71(2)ja on 22.9.1919 cover to a soldier with the AIF Abroad, Melbourne 'FINISH THE JOB/BUY PEACE BONDS' slogan cancel, minor faults well clear of the stamp, Cat $150 used but unpriced on cover. A very rare franking. [A very late post-War usage to a soldier abroad, sent more than 10 months after the Armistice was signed on 11.11.1918]

Batch of mostly Australian PPCs predominantly Ships including WWI Troop Ships 'Seang Choon', 'Itonus', 'Bakara', 'Persic', 'Mauretania' & 'Omrah', seven advertising cards including Burns-Philp 'Montoro', P&O 'TSS Geelong' & Melbourne Steamship Co 'SS Dimboola', also wharves at Melbourne, Port Melbourne & Williamstown, etc, some British cards, most with ink notations on the reverse; also some covers & Postal Stationery with a few attractive advertising types noted, condition variable. Inwards mail to Australia including Boer War commemorative postcard with photo of Ex-President Kruger in green, WWI Indian PPC with 'Service of Prisoners of War/[signature] Colonel/Supt Civil Camp Belgaum' & 'PASSED CENSOR/BELGAUM/WEH' cachets, 1933 registered from Gibraltar, WWII group from RAAF servicemen at various Canadian camps, 1940 stampless naval cover from Hong Kong, c.1940 airmail from Dutch Indies with 'FELDPOST / B /SORTEERKANTOOR' cancel, 1944 registered airmail from Switzerland with German censorship, 1963 airmail PPC from St Lucia, 1960s group from Uruguay including registered items, modern mail to University of Sydney including from Congo, Ethiopia, Iraq, Tanzania & Tunisia, etc; also Gallipoli makeshift postcard dated 18.5.15 with Australian FPO cds to NZ with message "...The only objection I have to the place is the amount of shrapnel & bullets that are flying about..."; condition variable.

1914 commercial covers from Germany 1) of 20.7.1914 with 'HANNOVER-BOXTEL/BAHNPOST' d/s, Sydney arrival b/s of AU24-1914; 2) & 3) of 24.7.1914 & 25.7.1914 both with 'HE' perfin & 'HANNOVER-/LINDEN 1' cds, Sydney arrival b/s of AU24-1914 & AU31-1914; all with makeshift censor label & 'OPENED BY CENSOR' h/s in blue, minor blemishes. [Australia declared war on Germany 4.8.1914 by which time these covers were in transit. If posted even a week later they would probably have been intercepted & detained in London]
1914unfranked cover from AIF serviceman endorsed "No Stamps available.../On Active Service/Troopship SS Euripides" with '1ST AUST INF BDE FIELD PO/24NO14' cds used at Steamer Point, Aden on face, Sydney '21DE/1914' machine cancel arrival and scarce altered '1D' double-ring circular tax cachet alongside charging single deficiency, a couple of edge faults and light fold. [The Euripides was part of the first convoy to Egypt; this is the only recorded day of use of this Australian FPO d/s at Aden. The free postage concession for Australian troops serving overseas was not introduced until February 1915. In the interim, the Sydney tax marking had 'LATE FEE' excised and was pressed into use to charge addressees for unpaid Soldier's Mail]

WORLD WAR I:Gallipoli postcard with '1ST AUST INF BDE FIELD PO/3AU15' d/s, four KGV 1d Envelopes to servicemen abroad and forwarded to UK camps including registered with 3d Kangaroo & red 'NSW/George-st West' label, also 1d 'MILITARY ENVELOPE' (unusually registered but with the 3d stamp removed), 'Active Service' envelopes with various FPO markings including 'MOUNTED BRIGADE', 1916 'PRISONER OF WAR LETTER/FREE' on Liverpool Camp cover, etc, rather mixed condition.
Western Europe mostly commercial coverswith Italy 1928 uprated postal card to Manchuria, Switzerland 1915-17 with Melbourne 'PASSED' censor cachets & 1945 airmail to Australia with 'OAT' cachet, France 1939 to US Military Attache in Costa Rica, also Greece, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Ireland, etc, a few pre-stamp items, WWII and later airmails & censorship, registered, postage dues, advertising covers, postal stationery and PPCs, some Flights & FDCs, condition generally fine.
AUSTRALIA:'Australian Imperial Forces Postal History 1914-18' by Bob Emery (1983), and the matching 'Supplement' (1988), both hardbound with d/j.
AUSTRIA - Postal History
Mostly commercial covers including 1878 to Italy with 10kr tied 'TRIEST' oval d/s and other 19th Century usages from Austrian Empire in Eastern Europe and Foreign POs with quite a lot of postmark interest, range of WWI censor cachets on postcards, then WWII and later airmails & censorship noted many to Australia with values to 20s, quantity of postal stationery and picture postcards, also registered, postage dues, advertising covers, condition generally fine.
Mostly 20th Century covers accumulation including WWI, Inflation period, a few Zeppelin, DOX & Catapult items, lots of Third Reich with 1938 two large registered covers airmail to Australia each with 5mk Cathedral x2 and 3m Zeppelin (one with Sydney 'OFFICAILLY SEALED' labels) plus a group of Sudetenland covers, 1944 POW postcard airmail to New Zealand with 40pf Hitler, other WWII military, censor & POW mail plus a few documents, quantity of post-war Allied Occupation covers, early West & East Germany and Berlin, then later including airmails to Australia up to modern with registered, taxed, stationery, postcards, etc, condition mixed but many fine.
POSTAL HISTORY:Mostly covers including 1806 from St Andrews, 1872 mourning cover to Melbourne with 4d & 6d, 1919 PPC to Australia with 'Postal Censor' cachet, 1936 airmail to New Zealand with 2/6d Seahorse, 1945 POW & Forces airletters, other postal stationery and a few Airgraphs, lots of airmails to Australia with KGVI and QEII frankings including Wildings & Machins, registered & official mail, censorship, generally fine.
INDIA - Postal History
Two cartons of covers & Postal Stationery from 1860s to 1970s, noted 1876 to Australia "via Torres Straits" with 8p & 4a x2, 1888 2a Registration Envelope to Guatemala via Bombay-Aden 'SEA POST OFFICE' and France, 1934 KGV 4a Airmail Postal Card to French Somaliland, mounted displays of Postal Stationery, WWII Censorship and Field POs, 'LATE FEE' and other instructional markings & labels, advertising covers, registered & official mail, hundreds of postcards with TPO cancels, a few States issues & overprints, lots of postmark interest, also a few stamps and FDCs, condition mixed but many fine.
NEW GUINEA - "N.W./PACIFIC/ISLANDS" Overprints
Collection on German pages with KGV set plus 4d chrome-yellow (a bit toned), Kangaroos First Wmk to 10/- mint x2 plus 10/- & £1 used, Second Wmk 5/- mint & to 5/- used, Third Wmk simplified mint to £1 x2 plus £1 used, Surcharges mint & used, New Colours used, etc, fine to very fine. All stamps checked by Peter Holcombe & four with his certificates.
1915-16 Overprints on Kangaroos£1 brown & blue SG 85 abc strip, bright colours, lightly mounted, Cat £2750. Rare.
1917-19 seven registered philatelic covers all but one to Switzerland, various Kangaroo & KGV Overprints to 5/- x2, Rabaul registration labels German x3 (two without hyphen) or black/white x3, and two commercial covers to Switzerland 1) with 2½d; and 2) with KGV ½d & 5d, German registration label & '[crown]/PASSED CENSOR/23MAR1917/RABAUL' cachet, Italian censor tape & cachets, minor fault at the top.
1916missionary's cover with 2½d & 1918 cover with 1d only & mss "T30" both to Holland endorsed "Letter for enemy country" or "Letter for Germany" & with black/white or violet/white Sydney censor labels, also 1918 OHMS cover with Treasury cachet & 2½d (rounded corner) unusually to Dutch Indies where readdressed with 'GAROET' arrival b/s.
1928cover to the Neuendettelsauer Mission in Bavaria with late but permitted usage of New Colours 1d violet & 2d scarlet tied by superb 'FINCHHAFEN' cds.
POSTMARKS:Straight-line 'Station Kieta.' in blue on 2½d (rounded corner); also 'RABAUL/Nov,2 1914' on Kangaroo ½d punctured 'OS'.
