RELIGION: Mostly British group of preachers & evangelists etc including "Gipsy" Smith x3, "Rev S Schor as Eastern Scribe", "Miss Helen Coulthard: The Girl Preacher", "FC Sackett: Children's Evangelist" etc, also "Partick Congregational Church" (3 ministers), 1908 "Wesleyan Conference Souvenir" with 26 separate photos!, "Installation of the...Bishop of Worcester", British Bishops & their Arms x5, "Six Presidents of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints", Catholic group of Cardinals & Popes, 1905 "Catholic Association Pilgrimage to Rome", 1899 German chromo-litho mourning card for a cardinal, a few Judaica, India "Muslims Praying on Ramzan", Ceylon Cremation of a Buddhist Priest, many real photo types including "Wesleyan Home Missions Gospel Car", Revival Tents x3 & Tibetan Priest x2, etc, condition variable but generally fine to very fine. RELIGION: Box of mostly British cards including a small selection of Churches & a good array of Ministers & Bishops, also "Gipsy" Smith & Pope Leo XIII x2, excellent Salvation Army group including an Indian Mission card (a great shot!) & five different Bands including "Salvation Army Mexican Band, Garston" (Liverpool!!) & "The Norwegian Staff Band", etc, also several sets of devotional cards including The Lords Prayer two different sets of 8, "The Volunteer Organist" set of 4 & Misch & Co "The Holy Scriptures in Pictures" complete set of 60 plus Italian sets of 10 Popes & 10 Saints (absolutely gorgeous cards in superb condition) in their original envelopes, and German Martin Luther cards x10, etc, condition variable but generally fine to very fine & many are superb. RELIGION: SALVATION ARMY: British group including portraits of officers, 1899 cameos of General & Mrs Herbert Booth to Germany, superb real photo of Salvos & ambulance (?) at a military camp, etc, plus India real photo of turbaned Punjabi Salvos!, and New Zealand "Wellington South Salvation Army Band 1907" & c.1915 "Salvation Army Soldiers' & Relatives' Hostel Featherson" (Military Camp), a couple are defective but most are fine to very fine. SALVATION ARMY: Mostly South Australian group including studio portraits, "General Booth on Tour", etc, real photo types including "Self-Denial Appeal Oct 1912", "Adelaide Citadel Silver Band 1915" & "The Golden West Perth Congress April 1910", fine to very fine. Ex Bronte Watts. [See also Lot 197]
ABORIGINES: 1910 real photo "A Family Group Corranderrk" used at Healesville with message "Some of the patients. I know them". Superb! Ex Shirley Jones. [In 1863, the Victorian Government established a reserve south of Healesville for the local Wurundjeri People. It was closed in 1924 & many of the Aborigines were re-settled at Lake Tyers. However, to this day there is a significant Aboriginal population in the Yarra Valley, south of Healesville]
ABORIGINES: Real photo types "A Family Group", "Group", "Wedding Group" & "Darby" all of Aborigines at Corranderrk , all used at Healesville in 1910.
MISSIONARIES: French Catholic Missionnaires Oblats de Marie-Immaculée (Missions d'Extreme-Nord Canadien) sepia/cream cards with subjects including Building the Mission, Nuns Arriving at a Flimsy Jetty, Priest Mending Fishing Nets etc, & beautiful Eskimo studies including School Class, Women Sewing etc, fine to very fine unused. MISSIONARIES: French Catholic Missionnaires Oblats de Marie-Immaculée (Missions de Ceylan) sepia/cream cards with subjects including at least 18 People in a Single Canoe (!), Huge Swarm of School Children, Missionaries with Bicycles, Jungle Churches, Visiting Bishop etc, two used, fine to very fine. Attractive bundle including some unusual Topographicals with a few Undivided Backs including "Street at Newchwang" with 1c Coiling Dragon, "Lobby/Lakeview Hotel/Hangchow" used in 1932 to Foochow, "The Coal Mine at Wushun", "Inside of Wushun Castle", "Nanking Road, Shanghai" with 4c Coiling Dragon, good group of Mission cards x15 including "Going to School" (great photo of two children in carrying contraption) and from Foochow "Bridge of the Thousand Ages", "Gymnasium, Boys Blind School" & "...the Band, Boys Blind School", group of artist cards printed in England plus 1927 invitation postcard from Amoy School of Art locally used, Swatow Drawn Work Co Stamp Collage cards x6, etc, useful postal history content, generally fine to very fine. GERMAN MISSION IN INDIA: 1905 two-part card with 6 photos & 1911 artist card both with 'KHANDWA' cds (different types), also a different unused card.
1905 Presbyterian Church of Victoria Mission to Korea "City Gate, Seoul" & "Korean Candy Seller" (two small repaired tears), both used at Melbourne in 1905. Rare: the first examples we have seen.
Universities Mission to Central Africa cards with black & white photos x11, black & white "linocuts" x4, coloured artist cards x26 & others x7, a few are duplicates, two are captioned "Zanzibar", generally fine to very fine unused or used. Ex Derek Pocock.
PAPUA - 1901-1942 The BNG & Papua Stamps Period
New Guinea Mission "Our Whaleboat", London Missionary Society "Models of Saguane Church and Tree Hut", "Wamira Mission School, New Guinea", real photo "Port Moresby" endorsed on the address side "Fernberg/Govt House/1 Jan 10" & signed "JA Musgrave" (the Government Secretary), Valentine's "A Chief's House", coloured Dutch card "Papoea-Dorp bij Port Moresby", and a PPC-size photo of native boys apple-bobbing, most are unused.
Attractive bundle of French Missionary cards mostly Sacred Heart Fathers on Yule Island, a couple of duplicates, some minor blemishes but generally fine to very fine unused.
MISSIONARIES: French Catholic Missionnaires Oblats de Marie-Immaculée (Missions du Sud-Afrique) complete set of sepia/cream cards with captions for Natal, Transvaal and Zululand but the majority for Basutoland , many terrific subjects including Basutos on Horseback, the Bassuto King at Church, Group of Lepers, Missionaries Roughing It, Boys' Gymnasium Class, Zulu Warriors, Women Building Huts, etc, a few problems noted but generally fine to superb, apparently all unused.
