1931 Lord Howe Island-Australia #184a with rare franking of 1½d Sturt endorsed by hand "2d/Paid/PM/LHI" - the famous "Lord Howe Island Provisional" BW #139c - + 3d Air with only the latter tied by the 'LORD HOWE ISLAND/NSW' cds - as was the "proper" course - 3-line h/s in violet signed by the pilot "FrancisChichester" who has additionally endorsed the reverse. Plus 1947 signed letter from Chichester stating "...I carried either 2 or 3 of these surcharged stamps on the same number of covers..." Eustis cites this information at page 58. Chichester numbered the covers. This is "No 123". Eustis states the highest number recorded is '123'. [One of the most important covers of Lord Howe Island philately]
