SANDAKAN: 1943 plain cover from NSW addressed "Interned in Borneo Camp" with Sydney machine cancel plus Melbourne censor label & cachet in violet, North Borneo POW Camp cachet in violet on the reverse, endorsed "Recd 29.8.44" on the face, remarkably fine. Rare. [Between January & June 1945, in a series of "death marches", a total of about 2500 Australian & British POWs held at Sandakan were forced to march 250km inland to the mountain village of Ranau. The only survivors of the infamous Sandakan Death Marches were six Australians who escaped]
