1914-15 6mm Spacing '8d.' on 80pf black & carmine/rose SG 11, ironed-out crease, unused, Cat £900; also BNG 2½d SG 12 used (with RPSofV Certificate !).(Qty 2)
NEW GUINEA - "N.W./PACIFIC/ISLANDS" Overprints
1915-16 King George V Single Watermark ½d green with the Watermark Inverted SG 65aw abc strip, the first unit with a hinge remainder, the other units unmounted, Cat £6400++. [Barry Gribble's a b & c singles - all hinged - sold for $1380, $1667 & $2530 respectively at our auction of 25/3/2011. The b & c units here are the only unmounted examples known to us]
1915-16 Kangaroos Second Wmk 9d violet SG 89 type c with White Flaw Under 'TA' of 'POSTAGE'  BW #21(1)d, well-centred, a little aged, ACSC Cat $950. A rare variety with NWPI overprint.
1918-23 Fifth Setting Large Multiple Watermark ½d bright green with the Watermark Inverted SG 119w, well centred, unmounted, Cat £100 (mounted).
1916 usage of OAS Gratuitous Distribution Letter Card with poem printed on the reverse, message to the sender's young son headed "Madang 26.8.16", KGV 1d red tied by 'MADANG' cds curiously of 24AU16, rare oval 'CENSORED BY/DISTRICT OFFICER/WMB OGILVY' cachet & 'RABAUL' transit b/s of 1SE16, a few faults but most presentable. A rare usage in New Guinea. [Not listed in the ACSC because it was produced by staff at the Commonwealth Stamp Printing Office & not for the Post Office]
1918 Reinhard cover to Switzerland with provisional usage of small 'RABAUL.' h/s in violet in lieu of a registration label, a little reduced at the base; and 1919 OHMS cover with 1d tied by Rabaul cds & 'THE TREASURY/RABAUL' cachet.(Qty 2)

STAMP DUTY: Huts overprinted 'STAMP/DUTY' 1d green on two Melanesia Co invoices, Stamp Duty 1d pink single on a receipt & pair on an invoice, some defects; also PNG 1d on 6½d strip of 5 (**).(Qty 5 items)
POSTAL HISTORY: Airmail covers including 1930 with Guinea Airways cachet, 25/5/1938 Sydney-Rabaul-Sydney signed by the pilot "RO Mant", 1938 commercial from Melbourne with KGV 5d, 1947 Rabaul-Sydney with 'Re-opening Flight!' label & signed by the pilot "J Bonnington", 1949 Rabaul-Talasea by flying boat signed by the pilot "Hugh M Birch", etc, two are registered.(Qty 10)
POSTAL HISTORY: 1937 stampless registered OHMS cover endorsed "Rabaul/1193 a" & "Franked/JBourke", to Adelaide with Kokopo cds of 4JU37, Sydney transit & 'PARKSIDE' arrival b/s, the flap removed & ironed-out folds. Rare: the only registered cover we have seen from the disaster mails. [In early June 1937, Rabaul experienced violent volcanic eruptions. Emergency mails were transported to Kokopo, from where they were flown to Brisbane for on-forwarding. As indicated by the flight admonition at upper-left being crossed-out, this cover was forwarded by sea] Enclosed note signed "Jim Bourke" states "This went per Montoro on 9.6.37. You will appreciate that it was difficult to accept letters, air mail, for registration with no postage paid. No registered mail was despatched per VHU-YE".
