NEW GUINEA - German (Deutsch) New Guinea Postal History
1889 (Oct 7) cover from Wurttemberg with 10pf pair tied by 'URACH' cds to "Finschhafen/Kaiser Wilhelmsland/Neu Guinea" & endorsed "Via Genoa", 'GENOA' & 'SOERABAJA' transit backstamps, surprisingly fine for such an early inwards item. Ex Fred Pearson & Michael Courtis: sold at our auction of 19.6.2015 for $2340. [The first postal agency in German New Guinea opened at Finschhafen 15.2.1888, and closed 19.3.1891. This is one of the earliest inwards items to New Guinea that we have seen. [The addressee, Dr Carl Weinland was Medical Officer with the Neu-Guinea Compagnie]
1889 (Dec 28) inwards cover to Dr Weinland at "Stefansort" (sic) with Wurttemberg 10pf x2 tied by 'REUTLINGEN' cds, largely very fine 'FINSCHHAFEN/24 4/90' arrival b/s, minor blemishes. [Dr Carl Weinland died of malaria at Finschhafen in March 1891]
1898 cover to Germany with 20pf pair tied by two fair to fine strikes of the 'MATUPI' cds, imperforate registration label (Einfeldt Type 1), 'FREIBURG' arrival b/s, minor blemishes. Ex Michael Courtis.
1903 cover with Yachts 40pf tied by 'MATUPI/8 4/02' cds & imperf registration label, to Sicily with poor 'PALERMO' arrival b/s, minor blemishes.
1907 Wiegand cover with 5mk superb marginal example from the top of the sheet tied by two strikes of the 'STEPHANSORT' cds, 'Stephansort' registration label, Leipzig arrival b/s. Superb! Michael Jaschke-Lantelme Certificate (2009).
1914 PPC ("Missionstation St Michael mit Hafen") with Yachts 3pf tied to the view-side by a very fine strike of the rare 'DEULON/(DEUTSCH-/NEUGUINEA)/2.3/14' cds, addressed but not posted. Ex Harold Gough: sold at the Prestige auction of 17.10.2008 for $1725.

Selection with DNG simplified set '1d.' on 5pf to '8d.' on 80pf, the 3d on 25pf with a pulled perf, the 4d on 40pf used, also 'OS' duo & 'GRI/3d' on Kawieng/(Deutsch Neuguinea)' registration label SG 42 (no gum); Cat £2200 minimum.
1914-15 6mm Spacing '1d.' on 5pf green marginal block of 4 from the left of the sheet on local cover, both R/H units with Flat Top to '1' SG 2 & 2c, central 'STEPHANSORT/ 13 ' "frozen" cds in blue, Cat £1320++.
1914-15 6mm Spacing '3d.' on 30pf black & orange/buff SG 8 (Cat £475) uncancelled on cover with typed 'I hereby certify that the attached stamp is one of the original sets of surcharged stamps issued by the British [sic] Administration of German New Guinea' & signed "Walter P Fry Capt/Treasurer".
1914-15 5mm Spacing '4d.' on 40pf SG 24 horizontal strip of 10 from the top of the sheet comprising all 10 positions of the overprint forme, mostly well centred, unmounted, Cat £1800++ (for mounted singles). Peter Holcombe Certificate (1991). A very desirable item.
1914 Overprints on Marshall Islands '1d.' on 5pf to '8d.' on 80pf SG 51-58, the '3d.' on 25pf with a few short perfs, a couple of low values unmounted; also '1' on '2d.' on 10pf SG 63; Cat £2200.

Simplified selection with Roos to £1 (Third Wmk SG 99, very fine unmounted), KGV to 5d including New Colours, 1918 Surcharges and punctured 'OS' 5d & 1/- both used, Cat £1100+.
Oswald Marsh registered covers comprising 1) 1917 with ½d to 1/-; 2) 1918 with 2/- (with the Watermark Inverted) to £1; and 3) 1922 with New Colours 2d orange, 2d scarlet & 4d blue.
