C of A - Postal History
1934 (March 23) very late usage of illustrated telegram form for Opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, minor faults. [A permanent post office opened in the SE Pylon on 19/3/1934. The PM was permitted to use up the telegrams to advertise the fact: "...we have 45 permanent employees & 60 entertaining attractions..." The PO closed 14/7/1942]
1937 registered cover to Hobart with KGVI 2d Die I & 3d blue Die I "White Wattles" - rare on cover - tied by 'CLIFTON/13SE37/QUEENSLAND' cds, 'TPO 2 NORTH/UP 3/NSW' transit b/s.

1905 5d Diadem Jubilee plain envelope to Scotland with Diadem 5d tied by one of two strikes 'ST JAMES HALL/5D/JUBILEE/1DEC05/SYDNEY NSW' cds used one day only. [The first CofA commemorative datestamp. Usage on envelope is much scarcer than on the commemorative PPCs]

"Classics" group including Sydney Views 1d Plate I & 3d (3), Laureates 1d (3), 3d, 6d (3) & 8d etc, group of Diadems with numeral cancels, 1856 outer with BN '26' & very fine 'SHOALHAVEN' crowned-oval b/s, BN '1769' of Guy Fawkes on 1d Arms.
"Classics" selection including 1851 Laureates 2d reconstruction of the 50 positions (very mixed condition), an attractive selection of other Laureates and Diadems with a number of pairs. (105)
1849 Carmichael Essay for a 1d Queen Victoria design derived from Great Britain's "Penny Black", being a die proof in black on thin wove paper (36x39mm). Ex Ginger, Carleton-Henry & Sir Gawaine Baillie.
1850 Sydney Views "Penny Black"-style essays by Alfred Clayton for a 1d in scarlet, in blue or in scarlet & blue, toned paper. Ceremuga Certificates (2004) each state "...reproduction or forgery". [Again, these are van Dyck facsimiles. A similar set of three affixed to a piece of paper endorsed "Clayton" sold for $2760 in the Sir Gawaine Baillie auction. The auction catalogue noted one other similar set having been recorded]
1850 Sydney Views 3d imperforate plate proof single in deep myrtle-green on thin card. Superb!
1854-59 Diadems 6d grey-brown SG 96, margins close to good, shallow thin at top, Cat £650.

1856-60 Small Diadems plate proof of 4 units from a block of 6 - the lower two units having been removed - with Blank 'POSTAGE' & Value Tablets and Waxed Corners at Lower-Left, in brown-red on unwatermarked wove paper. A rare proof. Ex John White & Sir Gawaine Baillie. [Most such proofs are singles that have been cut-close & had the waxed corner trimmed-off. Such items also routinely have faults]
1856-60 Small Diadems 1d, 2d (large-part o.g.) & 3d SG 107, 112 & 117, the first two with full margins, the 3d with margins just clear to large, Cat £1170.
1856-60 Imperf Small Diadems 2d blue vertical pair [24/36] each with Major Retouch SG 112a, margins close to large, Cat £900+. Ex Ron Butler.
1860-72 Diadems Perf 12 1/- brownish-red (clean-cut perfs) & 1/- rose-carmine SG 153 (Watermark Inverted, unusually well centred, characteristic rough perfs), unused, Cat £1300+. (2)
1861-88 Five Shillings Coin 5/- dull lilac Perf 10 SG 178 marginal example from left of the sheet with floral design in the margin, unused, Cat £140++.
1897-99 Wmk '40' 1d Arms vertical pair from right of the left-hand pane Imperforate Three Sides, characteristic light vertical fold in what was the central gutter, very lightly mounted. A stunning variety! Ex Sir Gawaine Baillie.
1902-07 collection on leaves with mint including 1902-03 9d on 10d & 2/6d, 1903 9d (92), 1905-10 6d, 8d, 10d (3), 1/- & 2/6d, 1907 2½d to 1/- etc, STC £500+. (100 approx)
