1902 Swan 1d red with heading 'FOR USE WITHIN WESTERN AUSTRALIA' LC1, to a ship's passenger at Auckland uprated with 1d tied by Fremantle duplex of NO4/02, forwarded to San Francisco & returned to Auckland, forwarded again to Palmerston North & finally again to Auckland where it was apparently delivered, instructional handstamps 'NOT ON BOARD' (American?) and NZ boxed 'NOT FOUND' & scarce 'RETURNED FROM/...' both in magenta, not surprisingly a bit soiled. An exceptional contemporary usage of this rare issue. Ex Dr Ed Druce: acquired for $1035. [In WA in 1902, 1d paid the town letter rate only, 2d being the rate both intrastate and interstate, and also to New Zealand & Fiji. The 1d Letter Card is recorded from July 1902 & was withdrawn about October 1902. 2400 were delivered to Perth but very few examples have survived, especially used]
1902 QV 2d brown-red LC2 Die 1 with 'TWO.PENCE', philatelic usage to New Zealand with 'SHIP MAIL ROOM' duplex of OC22/02 & 'DUNEDIN' arrival b/s, intact & sealed.
