MILITARY CAMPS: 1915 (Oct 7) OHMS cover from Adelaide with KGV 1d red perf 'OS', to "2nd Depot Batt/Belmont/West Australia", large very fine strike of the rubber 'MILITARY CAMP, ASCOT/19OCT1915/WESTERN AUSTRALIA' arrival b/s (ERD; RO period) in violet & 'OCT 20 1915' date h/s on the face in the same ink, redirected to "Blackboy Hill" with very fine arrival cds on the face, superb 'UNCLAIMED' h/s & returned to the sender. A very desirable cover.

Ascot Camp was at Belmont Racecourse. Haynes & Pope state that a Receiving Office opened 20.10.1915, the day after this cover was serviced there; was raised to a PO in -.11.1915; closed -.2.1917. Blackboy Hill civilian PO was taken over by the Military as an RO on 29.8.1914; to PO 11.9.1914; closed 30.11.1918. Examples of the Ascot Camp steel cds on piece only sold for $470 & $616 at the Prestige auctions of 17.5.2003 & 26.9.2003 respectively. The rubber cds is much scarcer & this is only the second example on cover that we have recorded. Haynes & Pope state it "was not a postal marking", but the two covers recorded counter this statement.

1855 stampless OHMS part-entire to the Postmaster General with postmaster's endorsement "Lockwood PO/May 22 55" at lower-left, Melbourne arrival b/s & Butterfly '14' in red as a receiving mark, minor blemishes. Lockwood (2) PO opened c.-/2/1855 but some 3 months later, apparently had still not received a datestamp or numeral. The letter states "I...request that two small mail bags be forwarded to this office for the use of Sandhurst & Lockwood Mails...A Inglis/PS The horse which carried the missing mail was found a few days ago at Clark's Station Mt Cole with the saddle still upon his back but the mail bag was gone". [Brian Peace, in "Mail Robberies by Bushrangers" lists no incidents between June 1848 and June 1861. However, this may well be a robbery-related item]

1832 large-part OHMS entire endorsed "Ratnapoora Catchery June Sixteen 1832" & signed at lower-left, to Kandy with largely very fine strikes of the previously unrecorded 'RATNAPOORA' & 'FREE' handstamps, overall damp-spotting that is not unattractive. An exciting new discovery of a significant rarity. Ted Proud states Ratnapura opened only in 1861, while Geoff Oxley's ERD for any Ratnapura marking is 1858. Here is proof that there was a post office at Ratnapura as early as 1832. [The strikes are superior to those on a similar outer only of three months later that sold in our auction of 6.3.2015 for $1228]

Four similar covers were found. On one, the strikes are poor. The finder has retained the fourth example.
