C of A - Postal History
1936-37 commercial airmail covers to "Wau/New Guinea" at 3½d x5, double-rate 5d x2 (one overpaid ½d) & purported triple-rate 6½d x2, condition variable. A very scarce group. [The rate was 2d per ounce letter rate + 1½d per ½oz airmail supplement. The correct triple-rate was 2d x2 + 1½d x3 = 8½d]

WORLD WAR II: 1943 airmail Hobart to Queensland Construction Camp censored with red/white label (Little #L6-6b) tied by small circular 'CHECKED/BY/ 6/2 ' cachet in violet - unrecorded by Little - on the face, forwarded to "1 Aust Corps/Recp Camp" then to Papua with 'FIELD POST OFFICE/20JE43/019.' b/s, finally 'RETURN TO SENDER/ON/MILITARY BOARD INSTRUCTIONS' cachet in violet on face, some water-staining & other blemishes. Crash mail?
Pacifics oddments with NWPI 1918 Surcharges used, Papua postmarks including 'CAPE NELSON NED', part-'[KO]KODA/[BRITISH NEW GUIN]EA' & unframed oval 'LOOSE/SHIP/LETTER', various German Colonies Yachts to 3mk mint & to 1mk used, generally fine to very fine.
PAPUA: useful bundle with French Mission cards x28, British Mission cards x4, Whitten Bros x2, Australian Museum featuring photos by Frank Hurley x8, etc, generally fine to very fine used under cover or unused.
PAPUA: Smith & Anthony 'New Guinea Methodist Mission' Series 1 with Grey Borders, all different, unused.
PAPUA: 1930s Australian Museum (Sydney) sepia/yellow cards No 1-12 (missing only No 11, No 3 unnumbered) featuring photos by Frank Hurley, generally fine to very fine.
PAPUA: 1938 Carpenter Airways real photo PPC of pilot passenger & crew waiting to board, used at Port Moresby.
ZANZIBAR: Piece of ungummed Multiple Rosettes Watermark paper (134x60mm) as used for issues of Zanzibar, Papua & Sudan.
NEW GUINEA - Flight Covers
1934 (Apr 12) First Land Plane Solo Flight to Australia #P69a dated "19/3/34" with Undated Birds 3d & Airs ½d - perf faults - tied by typewritten 'FROM LAE PER WIDGEON VH-UGI/PILOT ("SMarshall")', 'CONCORD WEST/16AP34/ =NSW=' arrival b/s, minor blemishes, Cat $300++. [The typewritten cancellation is most unusual. The plane departed Wau 19.3.1934 but mechanical problems delayed the flight from Port Moresby until 12.4.1934. The AAMC states that about 100 covers were carried but most of these are from Papua. Only 3 or 4 were carried from New Guinea]

1934 (Apr 5) cover from NSW to "Wau/New Guinea" with KGV 2d pair tied by 'AIR MAIL/1 1/SYDNEY NSW' cds, endorsed "Left Territory" in red & with good strike of the rare boxed 'UNCLAIMED/AT RABAUL' h/s, Sydney DLO re-sealing label on the flap & h/s in magenta on the face.
PAPUA - 1901-1942 The BNG & Papua Stamps Period
Collection on Hagners with three dubious 'BNG' cancels on Queensland, then mostly mint with BNG set to 2/6d & used to 1/-, Bicolours to 10/- plus 9d & 1/3d with 'SPECIMEN' Overprint (and an extra 1/3d with no gum), Pictorials to £1, 1938-41 Airs, etc, 'OS' punctures including Large 'PAPUA' 2/6d CTO & Monocolours set to 2/6d (the last with no gum), 'OS' Overprints set, also 'Stamp Duty' Small 'PAPUA' 6d x2, Large 'PAPUA' 1d & Monocolours 1d, generally fine to very fine.
Complete sheets of 1) 1910 Large 'PAPUA' 2d x30 (5x6) including 'PCSTAGE'  SG 77/a, most units unmounted; 2) 1916-31 Bicolours 4d x40 (5x8) with Ash Imprint, very fine unmounted; and 3) 'TWO PENCE' on 1½d x40 with 'POSTACE'  & Mullett Imprint, minor toning, unmounted.

1907-10 Small 'PAPUA' ½d 1d 2½d & 6d two of each CTO with Port Moresby cds of 4JAN10 or 5JAN10 & all tied to a piece from an archival ledger by the large '.../COLLECTION/DE/BERNE/MADAGASCAR' cachet in rosine, minor blemishes & the piece folded clear of the stamps.
1916-31 Bicolours 10/- perforated plate proof in the issued colours on poor quality ungummed unwatermarked wove paper, well centred. [Only a block of 20 (5x4) - the lower-half of one sheet - is believed to have survived, including the imprint block of 6 & at least one vertical strip of 4. Thus, very few singles are available to collectors]
1932 New Denominations 9d & 1/3d SG 127 & 128 overprinted 'SPECIMEN', well centred with good perfs, the 1/3d appears to be unmounted, Cat £750 (mounted). A superior set. [Sold at the Prestige auction of 12.10.2012 for $874]
1934-41 Issues SG 146-168 complete, the British Protectorate & Silver Jubilee sets each with rubber 'SPECIMEN' handstamp, also PNG 1952 set, all affixed to pages from an archival collection of French Colonial origin. 1911 double-rate to USA with large oval 'THE TREASURY PAPUA/No...' cachet in green on back with remnants of wax seal, Lakatois Large 'PAPUA' 1d & 6d plus Monocolours 1d tied by 'PORT MORSEBY' cds and red & black R label alongside, Brisbane transit in blue and New York arrival b/s, couple of minor few blemishes.
1927 (Jan 29) commercial cover to the Northern Territory with Bicolours 1½d x3 tied by 'BUNA BAY/PAPUA' cds, st-line 'REGISTERED' h/s, Brisbane (7.3) & superb 'DARWIN NT/13AP27/AUSTRALIA' arrival b/s, minor soiling.
1939 commercial airmail cover to GB with very scarce franking of Declaration 3d & Coronation 5d x3 (a little oxidised) tied 'SAMARAI ED/16DE39/PAPUA' d/s, unusually censored with both red/white label & large cachet in violet, Townsville transit b/s, minor blemishes & light fold at base.
