Very early group comprising Austria 1885 & 1888 2kr Postal Cards with woodcut illustrations of 'Prebischthor' or 'Hoher Schneeberg' (now Pravcicka Brana & Decinsky Sneznik, both in the Czech Republic, the latter with 2-line 'POSTCONDUCTEUR IM ZUGE/KOMOTAU-BODENBACH No 916' Railway postmark); Belgium 1887 early court-size advertising card for "Hotel de la Poste/.../Bruxelles"; Germany 1889 Dresden multi-view, very early hand-tinted; and France 1890 Eiffel Tower chromolitho (repaired corner, stamp removed). Beautiful collection of mostly 1890s chromolithographs from Austria x4 including Emperor's Golden Jubilee x2; Belgium x5; France x21 including Composers x5 (superb unused) & Months of the Year x8; Italy x9 including Thomas Cook & Son advertising cards x2; Portugal x4; Switzerland x14 including Hotel advertising cards x3; & a few others, many are unused, also some postmark/postal history interest, generally fine to very fine. British Africa selection including Somaliland 1927 "Post Office Bay", Rhodesia x5, SWA x5 (two from German Period), Southern Nigeria & Zanzibar x16 (a couple of very early cards & 1906 - unfortunately defective - to British Central Africa, some postal history/postmark interest including World War I Indian Forces in Kenya & Tanganyika, condition variable.
European collection in an album with useful cards from France, Italy, Monaco, Switzerland, Russia & the Eastern Bloc, excellent postal history/postmark content including better frankings & unusual destinations, condition variable. Ex "Cartophile".
World War I group apparently all collected by or from one Australian soldier with strength in Egypt including two impressive panorama types (rolled-up but can be flattened) & three booklets of cards plus another from Belgium, one datelined "Christmas 1915/Gallipoli", also England Wales & Ireland, a few "silks" including two with the original inserts, etc, condition variable.

Bundle of mostly Darwin views but also Adelaide River, Katherine, mining at Tennant Creek etc, many real photos, generally fine to very fine. Ex Bronte Watts.
1915 real photo card "Return of His Excellency Dr Gilruth to Darwin 12.4.15" (with a bevy of white-suited officials on the wharf), used under cover with message "This is a view of our arrival in Darwin. Dad is on the fore part...". Ex Coo-ee Picture Library. [John Anderson Gilruth was a veterinarian (!) who, in 1912, was appointed Administrator of the Northern Territory. A straight-talker, he was unpopular with most Territorians, resulting in the "Darwin Rebellion" of December 1918. He was recalled two months later and, although ultimately absolved of any impropriety, spent many years in limbo before embarking on a new career with the CSIRO]
1918 "Darwin Rebellion" postcard-size photograph of at least 25 men - including several Aborigines - with placards & a red flag on the verandah of a brick building, minor spotting on the reverse only. Ex Coo-ee Picture Library. [The Rebellion was the culmination of eight years unrest by the Australian Workers' Union. On 17/12/1918, AWU Secretary Harold George Nelson & several hundred supporters marched to Government House to demand the resignation of the Administrator JA Gilruth]
1919 First England-Australia Flight R Rohrer real photo cards 1) Darwin's Population Inspecting the Vickers Vimy in a Paddock; and 2) Ross & Keith Smith with their crew JM Bennett & WH Shiers (and a local lad) Beside the Vimy; both superb unused. [See also Lot 284]
1935 (Feb) England-Australia Flight per Ray Parer & G Hemsworth Arrival at Darwin R Rohrer real photo cards 1) the Plane in a Field (the Airport?); and 2) Five Men Inspecting the Plane while Ray Parer Effects Minor Repairs; unused. Ex Coo-ee Picture Library. [The plane was entered in the epic MacRobertson Air Race but early problems caused withdrawal from the race at Paris. However, they were compelled to finish the journey, arriving at Darwin on 8/2/1935 & in Melbourne on 13/2/1935]

DARWIN: Mostly real photo cards - mostly pre-World War II - with streetscapes, public buildings, hotels, roadworks, ships stranded at low tide, a shanty town, the enormous "Men's Quarters" at the Meatworks, aerial shots of "Railway Station", "Government House...", "Jail Darwin NA", "Meat Works Darwin NA" & "Leper Station, Channel Island", etc, some are PPC-size photographs including 1938 Flying Boat "Coorong" Washed Up on Rocks [see AAMC #835; no mail recorded] (48); also smaller photographs x35 including PH Mendis hand-tinted x9; condition variable but generally fine to very fine. An historically important pictorial record. During World War II, Darwin was largely destroyed by Japanese bombing raids. And on Christmas Day 1974, the rebuilt city was obliterated by Cyclone Tracy.

ABORIGINES: "Natives Darwin" (very fine), "Finke River" (Girls at the Mission, coloured, with bumped corners), then real photo types "Native Home NT" (plain back, very fine), "Corroboree Preparations Arunta Aborigines" (tape stain away from the photo), J Backwood "Pine Creek Natives" (postally used at Brisbane in 1910), Rohrer Initiation Ceremony (?, fine), Vallan Studio "Bathurst Islanders" (fine), The Day's Catch (very fine) and Six Youths in a Dug-Out Canoe (very fine); also postcard-size photos Mail Call, "Old Trenches at Fort Dundas Melville island" (from the 1826 Settlement; a couple of faults) and Corroboree. WORLD WAR II: Real Photo cards x7 (mostly second-generation prints) and postcard-size photographs x8 of damage caused by Japanese Bombings in February 1942, the subsequent Fires, Damage to Buildings & in the Harbour, also an Australian Officer Taking the Salute & a patriotic "The Original Owners - V - Today's Defenders", generally very fine. Select group of Undivided Backs x13 of which eight are 1890s usages & four are of 1900, plus attractive artist cards including Medieval Scenes, & a few others, generally fine to very fine unused or used. Ex Keith Harrison.
Box of mostly chromolitho "Gruss aus" or similar "Pozdrav z" multi-view cards from throughout the Austro-Hungarian Empire including many towns known today by quite different names in what later became Czechoslovakia Poland & Yugoslavia, noted 1897 "Pozdrav z Bohdance" with two small photo-vignettes affixed (!), 1900 "Pozdrav z Votic" x2 different with real photo backs & 1900 "Jericho" with 'JORDAN HOTEL/JERICHO' cachet & Levant 20pa tied by 'JERUSALEM/OSTERREICHISCHE POST' datestamp, mostly 1890s usages - noted from 1894 - with excellent postal history content & many bilingual datestamps, nine are unused, generally fine to very fine. Bundle from Estonia x33 - three with Russian stamps & postmarks - including a lovely group of artist cards & 1929 'Talinn' wallet with ten superb real photos (plain backs); Latvia x25 - many with Russian or Latvian stamps & postmarks - plus a wallet with 12 fold-out colour views; also a few Lithuania & Memel; mostly unused, condition variable but generally fine to very fine. Selection from Antigua x2, Barbados x3, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica x2 (one to Dutch Guiana), St Kitts x9, Tobago & Virgins, many attractive views & subjects & several with Undivided Backs, some postal history/postmark interest, condition variable.
1909 floral card postally used with KEVII 2c tied by bars cancel with the original glassine posting envelope - a bit aged - in which a circle was cut to allow the stamp to be cancelled & with remnants of the bars & light '...WERS MILLS' datstamp. A very important postcard rarity: this is only the second such glassine mailing envelope we have seen, the other being from Australia. Ex Keith Harrison.
