1903 (Feb 4) usage of NSW 3d Registration Envelope to the Philippines "per JMS/Kumano Maru" with ½d strip of 3 & 1d tied by Sydney cds, superb 'R'-in-oval h/s below & straight-line 'REGISTERED' h/s in lieu of registration label, American-pattern 'REGISTERED/Manila PI' arrival b/s in violet, small fault at lower-left. [The Treaty of Paris (1898) which ended the Spanish-American War transferred control of the Philippines from Spain to the United States. However, this agreement was not recognized by the nascent Philippine Government which, on 2/6/1899, issued a Declaration of War against the United States. The Philippine-United States War officially ended in 1902, though hostilities continued until about 1913. The illustration is on page 20]
