OMNIBUS ISSUES: 1953 Coronation in Gibbons album, 1977 Silver Jubilee FDCs, 1981 Royal Wedding and 1998 Diana M/Ss.
C of A - Decimal Issues
1982 Queen's Birthday as the issued 27c - included for comparison - but denominated 24c BW #949E(1), unmounted, Cat $5000 (2002). A great modern rarity. [The ACSC classifies this stamp as an "essay". We consider this to be a mistake. The initial printing was of the 24c stamps. The rate was increased to 27c & a second print run at 27c was ordered. In our opinion, this is an unissued stamp, not an essay. The ACSC similarly classifies the initial printing of the 60c Whale as an essay, yet there is no doubt a quantity of those stamps were sold by the Australia Post, and commercial usage is recorded]
A block of 6 - the only examples recorded - came to light only in early-2002. The block was divided into two singles and a block of 4, and offered by Prestige Philately on 9.3.2002. The singles sold for $4480 & $4256 (the stamp offered here); the block sold for $15,680. This is the first example we have seen offered since then.
C of A - Postal History
1935 commercial airmail cover to Austria with scarce solo franking of Silver Jubilee 2/- violet tied by 'WAVERLEY/NSW' cds, Athens transit & Vienna arrival b/s. [The rate was 1/9d for air to Brindisi, then by rail; or 2/- by air all the way]
1941 unusual size envelope (185x197mm) to USA with 'CALIFORNIA/CLIPPER' h/s & rare franking of Robes £1 block of 4 (a few faults) + 4d Koala & 2/- Roo tied by Sydney cds of 24JY41, minor wrinkles. One of the highest-rated World War II airmail covers we have recorded, making this a wonderful item for the airmail enthusiast or the collector of KGVI issues. [NB: this cover does fit on a standard album page]
The Clipper rate to the USA was 4/8d for the first ½oz + 4/7d for each successive ½oz. Total postage of £4/2/4d = 988d. Postage for a letter weighing between 8½ & 9oz was 4/8d + 4/7d x17 = 991d, indicating underpayment of 3d (or an unlikely overpayment of 4/4d). [NB: Kevin Nelson's entire packet wrapping to GB with Robes 10/- strip of 5 & £1 strip of 4 sold at the Prestige auction of 27.11.2010 for $7187]
