POSTAL FISCALS: 1910 'Bechuanaland/Protectorate' Overprint on Transvaal 6d stone & orange SG F1 block of 4, the first unit with Raised 'B' in 'Bechuanaland', very lightly mounted & the lower units are unmounted, Cat £640++ (mounted).
1908 Postal Fiscal '1D' on 4d grey & red/yellow Barefoot #1, exceptional freshness & very lightly mounted, Cat £150 mint. Unlisted by Gibbons. Brandon Certificate (1989). [Maisel $US322]Only 396 stamps - three complete sheets plus 36 others - were prepared. Although this issue was intended for fiscal purposes only, the basic stamp is inscribed 'POSTAGE - & REVENUE', and a number of examples - including on two covers - were postally used. We contend that this stamp is far more deserving of catalogue status than many other stamps that, while technically valid for postage, could not be and never were used postally. For example, Gibbons list numerous Victorian "postal fiscal" denominations between £2 and £100, and even price most of them "used" even although not a single genuine postally used example of any of them has been recorded. Support for this stamp receiving catalogue status is given by the footnote below the rare £25 of Northern Nigeria: "...although [inscribed] 'POSTAGE & REVENUE', this was intended to pay the fiscal fee for liquor licences". Our expectation is that Gibbons will one day give this rare Cayman Islands stamp a listing, at which time the market price is likely to go through the roof.
