MAIL TO UK & EMPIRE
1905 (Apr 4) usage to London (b/s) of Tasmanian 2d Waterlow Envelope ("MOUNT WELLINGTON IN WINTER, FROM HUON NEAR HOBART"), small piece of the flap missing otherwise superb, Launceston cds. Beautiful! Rare: stated only two used examples of this view are recorded: no more than 306 of any view were printed & the vast majority were retained unused as souvenirs. [On 1/4/1905, the rate to Great Britain was reduced to 2d, making this an extremely early example of that rate]
MAIL TO OTHER COUNTRIES
1912 (June 13) usage to Sweden of Fullface 1d Letter Card ("SETTLER'S HOME VIC" in purple) with SA ½d added & tied by 'NORTH ADELAIDE' cds, endorsed "20c/T" & on arrival struck with 'T'-in-octagon h/s, 'LOSEN/("16") öre' postage due label affixed and 1ö and 15ö postage adhesives added in lieu of Postage Dues, carefully opened (in the European manner) without removing the margins. Outstanding & beautiful item: acquired for $3024 at our auction of 26/9/2003. [The message appears to be written in both Swedish & Esperanto]
1913 (Feb 11) usage of Kangaroo 1d Letter Card "ZOO ADELAIDE SA" (flamingoes) in purple, to Austria uprated with NSW ½d & 1d Roo tied by Sydney machine cancel & cds.
1913 (Mar 12) usage of 1911 KGV Fullface 1d Letter Card "LAKE ST CLAIR/TASMANIA" (man in boat) in brown, to France uprated with South Australian ½d & 1d tied by superb 'PETERSBURG/STH AUSTRALIA' cds, faint 'SAINT-LO/MANCHE' arrival b/s, a few tiny tonespots. [La Manche = the English Channel. St Lo is at the base of the Cotentin Peninsula on the Channel coast, in the Manche Prefecture]
MAIL TO FOREIGN COUNTRIES
1903 (Mar 23) usage of Queensland 1½d Postal Card ("A Queensland Schoolhouse") to Indo-China with very fine Rays '148' of 'THURSDAY ISLAND' (unframed cds alongside), 'VICTORIA/HONG-KONG' (b/s) & 'HAIPHONG/ TONKIN' transits, 'NAM-DINH/TONKIN' arrival b/s, the message in French, bumped corners.
1912 usage of 1911 Coronation 1d Postal Card (Queen Mary in Laurel Wreath Oval) to Germany uprated with ½d Swan but not cancelled until arrival with 'DRESDEN/ALTST 1 - XX' cds & faint boxed 'nacht entw' h/s in violet. Philatelic but a most appealing combination franking.
OVERSEAS: (Apr 2) usage of 1911 Fullface 1d Letter Card ("GIANT RED GUM, VIC" in red-purple) to Germany uprated with Victorian 2d purple & 2½d blue tied by 'REGISTERED/ 1 /MELBOURNE' cds, scarce black/white registration label, carefully opened in the European manner with the margins remaining intact. Registration of Letter Cards is most unusual, making this an exceptional States/CofA combination franking.
