"Sparrow Force" was formed to defend Timor from anticipated Japanes invasion. The troops arrived at Koepang 12.12.1941, only five days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Mostly from Tasmania & unprepared for tropical conditions, the Force was hard-hit by malaria & other illnesses. The Japanese landed 20.2.1942. The heavily out-numbered Allied troops refused to surrender and maintained extended & surprisingly successful guerilla tactics until being withdrawn between Dec 1942 & Feb 1943.
