Description: 1896 usage of envelope with 10-line printed address ending 'INDIA' addressed to a native "to lie at General/Post Office till called for/Calcutta" with 5d Pirogue tied by Suva duplex, various b/s including superb strikes of the boxed 'NON-RECLAME/NOT CLAIMED' h/s & square DLO d/s of Calcutta & Bombay, endorsed "Returned from India where unclaimed" in red on the face, minor defects. A highly significant & attractive item of great rarity. [These envelopes, ordered from India, were for use by Indian indentured labourers. The scheme was unsuccessful & very few examples have survived, this being the first of only 3 recorded by Alford pp94-95]
