Category: COOK ISLANDS - Postal History

Description: 1892 4-page letter to the British Resident at Rarotonga handwritten by Captain Rooke and headed "HMS Champion at Tahiti", a bit aged and a few faults. Ex Boulangier. An important historical document, of particular philatelic interest. [The writer communicates grievances from the chiefs of Mangaia & Aitutaki, inter alia about Queen Makea being on the proposed Cook Islands stamps (these were not issued until July 1893) & Rarotonga's large star on the first official frank h/s - the second type had all the stars of the same size. He suggests "...the simplest & best plan would be to annexe all the islands, give them the British instead of the disputed Federation flag & put the Queen's [Victoria's] head on their stamps..."]
