Description: 1854 stampless outer to Amsterdam "per Golden Age/via Panama" with 'PAID/MY5 B/1854/MELBOURNE' d/s in red, London transit b/s of JY-18/1854 & light Amsterdam arrival b/s both in red, address a little enhanced over a bleach-spot. A very scarce cover to a most unusual destination. Ex Brian Peace. [The "Golden Age" was the first trans-Pacific mail ship. At Melbourne it was delayed a number of times, & most covers endorsed per "Golden Age" were actually sent on other vessels. She departed Melbourne 5/5/1854 & Sydney 12/5/1854. The cost of coal for the voyage was ruinous & the experiment was not repeated. Not included in Palmer's census]
