Category: VICTORIA

Description: 1853 stampless cover to Sydney with embossed 'ADAMS & Co/AMERICAN/&/EUROPEAN/ EXPRESS/MELBOURNE,/NSW' embossed in blue on the flap, 'MELBOURNE/[crown]/OC*31/ 1853/VICTORIA' d/s but no evidence of postage having been paid, 'SHIP LETTER/[crown]/NO6/ 1853/SYDNEY' arrival b/s & rated "4" for an inwards shipletter, minor soiling. A famous cover: one of only three Adams Express covers recorded from Melbourne. [Adams & Co was an American company that acted as a forwarding agent. Letters from the States were received at Melbourne & put into this style of envelope for onwards transmission. Had the postage from Melbourne been paid in cash, a 'PAID' marking should have been applied. We suggest that Adams & Co had an arrangement with the the post office whereby they accepted letters for transmission & invoiced the company on a regular (monthly?) basis. Other suggestions are welcome!]
