Description: 1942 commercial airmail cover to Sydney with 3d brown x2 & straight-line 'HMAS MELVILLE' cancel, a second very fine strike on the provisional registration label plus two more across the flap where also endorsed by the sender "EC JOHNSON/HMAS PLATYPUS", 'ARMY POST OFFICE/3JY44/065' (used at Darwin) transit & Sydney arrival b/s, tombstone naval censor h/s in violet. Use of ships' names was highly irregular & contrary to military postal regulations. ["Platypus" was in Darwin Harbour when the Japanese bombed Darwin on 19/2/1942. She remained in Darwin as a training ship & later as a base ship. HMAS "Melville" was the naval shore station at Darwin]
