1914-15 Overprints on New Zealand QV Postal Fiscals Clean-Cut Perf 14½x14 £2 violet Scott #126 (formerly SG 133), marginal example from the base of the sheet, lightly mounted, Cat $US400. [J Edgar Williams had four mint examples. They sold for an average of $694 at our auction of 12/2/2010]
The current Gibbons' footnote states "We no longer list the £2 value as it is doubtful this was used for postal purposes". By this reasoning, hundreds of British Empire high value stamps for which there was clearly no postal need - eg Kenya & Uganda and Northern Nigeria - should be de-listed. At least two genuinely postally used - and expertised - examples of the £2 value exist: see below. Gibbons' curious action in discriminating against this stamp has served to significantly reduce its value in the marketplace.
