Description: FOUR PENCE - IMPERFORATE: CATALOGUED TRANSFER VARIETIES: 4d blue with 'T' of 'POSTAGE' Shaved to a Point at Foot SG 3d, margins just clear to good, 15-bars '8' of Fremantle, Cat £1000. [This variety occurs once in each pane of 60. [See also Lot 49]̃̃Gibbons lists twenty-two Transfer Varieties SG 3d to 3y. #3e to 3h - the famous Inverted Frame - are exceptionally rare & occur only in the first printing. All the others are very elusive. Fine examples appear at auction very infrequently. With five unused & six used stamps, this is the third largest group we are aware of having been offered at auction. The "Austin" (du Pont) Collection had 14 of these rare varieties. Frank Chadwick had 21. Dr Cecil Walkley had only SG 3d & 3w unused, and SG 3i 3j & 3s used.
