Description: 1883 (Aug 7) cover to Italy "per Pekin" with Perf 14 1d yellow-ochre & 6d lilac tied by poor 15-bar '6' cancels, fine Albany cds at base, fumigated at Venice where cut by three chisel slits (one affecting the 1d, another through the complete Union Bank of Australia wafer on the flap), Naples arrival, upright-oval '1A/DIST/11/SET/83' & '81'-in-heart postman's backstamps, minor faults. Ex Patrick Pearson and Dr Cecil Walkley: acquired for $3105. RPSofV Certificate (2011). Carried "Pekin" 7/8/1883; then "Venetia" from Aden direct to Venice arrived 9/9/1883. A very scarce 7d rate cover: see "Black Swan" (Mar 1987). Pope & Reynolds Census #54. [A cholera outbreak in Egypt caused Italian authorities to accept mail from the East only if it was not trans-shipped in Egypt]
