Description: 1860 duplicate entire to London "Via Marseilles" with Emblems 2d brown-lilac Horizontally Laid Paper SG 69 plus Perf 12 4d rose-pink SG 87 & Queen on Throne 6d blue, BN '2' & very fine 'M' (signifying carriage via Marseilles) of Geelong (b/s of AP-16/60) in red, London arrival b/s of JU12/60, two vertical filing creases one of which affects the stamps. Carried per "Emeu", departed Melbourne 25/4/1860, arrived Suez 2/6/1860; then per "Panther", departed Alexandria 4/6/1860, arrived Marseilles 10/6/1860. Ex Rodney Perry & Ken Barelli.

From prominent lawyer, pastoralist & politician Sir Charles Sladen, to his brother, enclosing a Second of Exchange for 25,000! In 1855, Sladen was Treasurer in Victoria's first Responsible Government. In 1863 he established the Colony's pre-eminent Leicester sheep stud at "Ripple Vale" Birregurra (from where the letter was written), named after his family home "Ripple Court" in Kent. Sladen post office in suburban Geelong opened 18/10/1954.
