Description:
1907-10 Large 'PAPUA' 2/6d black & brown Type A with the rare 'POSTAGIE' variety SG 48a, well centred, very lightly mounted, undercatalogued at £1400.
Only 136 sheets were printed, on which basis alone this variety must be very scarce. However, the flaw developed during the printing and therefore did not occur on all sheets. Absent from the Rybak, Troy & Banwell collections. Tony Williams' and John Williams' (no, they're not related) very fine mint examples sold for $1610 & $2530 at the Prestige auctions of 24/4/2009 & 6/3/2010 respectively. [Note that all stamps from Pos 5 have a White Diagonal Hairline at Upper-Right]
