DARWIN: Mostly real photo cards - mostly pre-World War II - with streetscapes, public buildings, hotels, roadworks, ships stranded at low tide, a shanty town, the enormous "Men's Quarters" at the Meatworks, aerial shots of "Railway Station", "Government House...", "Jail Darwin NA", "Meat Works Darwin NA" & "Leper Station, Channel Island", etc, some are PPC-size photographs including 1938 Flying Boat "Coorong" Washed Up on Rocks [see AAMC #835; no mail recorded] (48); also smaller photographs x35 including PH Mendis hand-tinted x9; condition variable but generally fine to very fine. Ex Coo-ee Picture Library.
An historically important pictorial record. During World War II, Darwin was largely destroyed by Japanese bombing raids. And on Christmas Day 1974, the rebuilt city was obliterated by Cyclone Tracy.
