Category: COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA - Postal Stationery

Description: WRAPPERS - STAMPED TO ORDER: 1938 "doubleton" 1d green + 2d red BW #WS21 for an unknown user, Melbourne cds of 27OC38, the length slightly reduced, folds from having been used to wrap a small box & corner fault at lower-left, undercatalogued at $1500. A remarkable item, being the only issue of its type, & one of the most outstanding KGVI issues of the entire British Empire. [This is not an uprated item. Because there was no KGVI 3d die, John Ash resorted to this "doubleton" expedient. 6000 were supplied in 1938-39. Only five complete wrappers are recorded. Because all but one of the addressees were medical doctors, it is speculated that the package contained pharmaceutical samples. Mark Diserio's complete example sold at the Prestige auction of 8.11.2013 for $2760]
