Category: SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Postal History

Description: 1887 (Apr 5) local use of unstamped envelope with 'EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE DE PORT-ADELAIDE/ COMMISSION ROYALE DE BELGIQUE' imprint at top & light ministerial frank h/s in violet at L/L, superb 'BRUXELLES' cds & '13'-in-circle postman's h/s, light vertical fold barely detracts. Ex John Lancaster. The only such South Australian Exhibition item we have seen from an overseas Commission. The frank h/s apparently allowed for free mail. [The Adelaide Jubilee Exhibition opened 21.6.1887 & closed 7.1.1888. The envelope likely contained a prospectus and entry form. Belgium, after only Britain, won the second largest number of awards, well ahead of the USA, Germany & France]
