Category: SOUTH AFRICA - Provinces

Description: CAPE OF GOOD HOPE: 1911 KEVII Coil Stamps 1d as SG 71 irregularly trimmed at top & base which is a common characteristic of coil stamps made from sheet-stock, neat Cape Town d/s of 27SEP11. One of the rarest stamps of South Africa. [Gibbons states below SG 78 "The d exists from coils conctructed from normal sheets..." They make no mention of the 1d]

With an excellent article from the SA Philatelist of June 2001, which identifies the following Provincial Coil Stamps: Cape d; Transvaal d 1d & 2d; and ORC 2d. It is stated "There are probably not more than 30 to 40 of these stamps [including an extraordinary PPC with Transvaal 1d x2 used to Sweden!] in circulation, and they constitute the rarest Union stamps". Six examples of the Cape 1d were subsequently reported. The stamp offered here is a new and important discovery, apparently the earliest recorded date for any of these rare coil stamps.
