Description:
MARIANAS: 1902 parcel piece with complete 'Der Ostasiatische Lloyd' label with printed address "Kais Postagentur/Saipan". The label is tied to the piece by French Post Offices in China 5c pair which in turn is tied by French 'SHANG-HAI/CHINE' cds, fine strike of the rare 'DEUTSCHE SEEPOST/ SYDNEY-/HONGKONG/12 7/02 a ' cds - used aboard SS "Oceana" - & very fine 'SAIPAN/MARIANEN' arrival cds, minor blemishes. A wonderful origin/destination item. Ex Tim Rybak. Steuer Certificate (2008) says of the Seepost cds "sehr raren" (= very rare).ÞÞOf the Seepost cds, Cockrill & Gottspenn state "extremely rare, particularly on cover". Friedemann at p819 states that the North German Lloyd service to the Marianas ended in December 1900 and "It was only at the beginning of 1903 that the postal ship Germania of the Jaluit Line started bypassing German New Guinea and instead called at Saipan on its way to Hong Kong." This item is 4 months earlier than Friedemann's commencement date of 3/4/1903. An ideal candidate for Lavar Taylor's "Vorlaufer" column "The Road Less Travelled".
