Description: 1852 entire signed "HDowling" to the Cape of Good hope rated "4" in red & endorsed "paid" with 'LAUNCESTON/4NO4/1852' cds, tiny temperance tract affixed across the flap (sadly damaged on opening), untidy inwards rate marking, some internal reinforcing/repairs. An unusual destination in this period. [Henry Dowling was a Baptist minister at Launceston & an ardent advocate of teetotalism. His youngest son, also Henry, founded in 1834 the Launceston Bank for Savings]
