Description: AUSTRALIA: c.1860 Hopwood's Ferry (Echuca) "One Pound" note (240x139mm) drawn on Wm Nicholson & Co at Melbourne, signed "JMcManus" at the base but unused, light vertical fold & a few minor blemishes still remarkably fine. aEF. A great rarity of Australian Colonial banknotes. [In the early 1850s Henry Hopwood, a former convict in NSW & Van Diemen's Land, acquired a punt on the Murray River & established the settllement that was later named Echuca. By buying out his competitors & building a pontoon bridge, Hopwood acquired a monopoly on local inter-Colonial trade. The illustration on the note's reverse is of both the punt and the bridge]
