Description: AUSTRALIA - VICTORIA: 1838 (Jan 8) "The Melbourne Advertiser" Vol 1 No 2 4pp hand-written!! foolscap pamphlet with shipping and trade notices, advertisements for Fawkner's Hotel (the first in Melbourne) & Fawkner's Library etc, also with a lengthy report "Particulars of the Murder of Constable Tomkins" including a correction to an error is issue #1, minor splitting at the fold reinforced with archival tape. A rare & remarkable social document of great historical merit. [This, the first Victorian newspaper, was published by the great self-promoter John Pascoe Fawkner. The first nine issues were handwritten. When type & a press arrived from Hobart Town he continued to publish weekly, until the paper was suppressed because Fawkner had no licence]
