Description:
1d deep carmine perforated plate proof - Comb Perf 14¼x14 - on Victorian V/Crown Paper with the Watermark Inverted BW #70PP(4), Compartment Lines at Right & Base, characteristically much off-centre to the upper-left revealing an additional Compartment Line to the left of the adjoining unit at right, large-part thick yellowish gum, Cat $15,000. A great Georgian rarity. [The ACSC states that only two singles - one defective, Ex Holbeach - and a horizontal strip of 3 are recorded. This is apparently a "new discovery", though our vendor has owned it for may years. This makes only three examples in private hands, of which this is - believe it or not - the best centred and almost certainly the finest. Sadly, the strip is locked-away in the Vickery Collection in Sydney's Powerhouse Museum]
