Auction: 170 - Lot number: 325 << Previous   Next >>

Description: The frontispiece from Gerald Ellott's Grand Prix exhibit, being a c.1870 hand-painted cover of a happy sailor on shore leave waving a banner into which a 1d Plate '86' has been incorporated, addressed to Hertfordshire but apparently not posted as the stamp is uncancelled & there are no backstamps, repaired opening tear across the flap suggests the cover was privately carried & delivered by hand. [The sender was Francis William Sullivan who joined the Royal Navy in 1848 as a cadet, & rose to the top of the tree, being knighted & on 5/8/1900 appointed Admiral of the Fleet]
