Auction: 178 - Lot number: 248 << Previous   Next >>

Description: 1846 entire headed "Northam 7 May 1846" & signed "SA Barker", to the Colonial Secretary and endorsed "Free", largely fine strike of the extremely rare octagonal 'UNPAID/("May 19 46")/NORTHAM &/TOODYAY' h/s in black and crossed-out as unnecessary on free mail because it rendered the recipient liable to postage due, internal faults/repairs but facially attractive. [Samuel Adams Barker arrived -/11/1834 per "John Adam". Prominent in the York and Northam areas, in 1850 he departed for South Australia. Later that year he was named as a defaulter in WA Mining Co shares]̃̃The Post Office opened 16/4/1842 at Katrine, halfway between Northam and Toodyay. This is the only Australian post office (apart from TPOs) that shared two town names!! On 23/4/1847 it was replaced by separate offices in both towns. According to PMI, this is the only recorded example and, in fact, the only recorded use of any Northam & Toodyay postal marking.
