SIX PENCE - IMPERFORATE: 6d golden-bronze SG 17 with obvious metallic lustre, margins good to large - except at the top where just touching - with a fragment of the adjoining unit at left, a couple of very minor tonespots, void grid cancel, Cat £2000. Bernard et Pascal Behr Certificate (2006). ̃̃Dr Cecil Walkley distinguished this issue on the basis of the presence - SG 17, 18 & 22 - or absence - SG 19 & 23 - of microscopic metallic particles. The so-called "bronze" component is shown under x-ray fluorescence to be "gilding metal" or brass, with a copper to zinc ratio of 85:15.
