Description: 1698outer endorsed "Per El Rey" (= for the King) addressed to the Governor & Capital [?] General of the States of Brazil with two small ribbon-slits, plus the enclosed letter with "Sun & Moon" watermark & signed "Rey", both with internal worm damage & repairs with archival tape but of fine appearance. [Pedro II was King of Portugal from 1683 until his death in 1706. Mail to Brazil in this period is very scarce. Until gold was discovered early in the 18th century, the Brazilian economy was largely based on sugar and slaves] (Qty 2 items)
