Description: 1902-13 KEVII 1d oversize printer's samples by the German printers Herbst u Illig comprising a "die proof" in black on thick unsurfaced wove paper and slightly smaller "plate proof" pairs in rose-carmine & dark blue on medium surfaced wove paper. Extremely scarce "Eckerlin essays", produced in 1924 to demonstrate the company's rotary intaglio process, stated to be faster & cheaper than printing from engraved steel plates.
