Auction: 231 - Lot number: 768 << Previous   Next >>

Description: AUSTRALIA: 'PARAPARAP/9OC18/NORTHERN TERRITORY' (the later of only two recorded examples) light but obvious strike slightly overstruck with similarly under-inked 'UNCLAIMED/PARAPARAP NT' h/s (the only example we have noted). Rated RRRRR. PO 4/7/1918; renamed Parap (1) 12/10/1918. One of the shortest-lived permanent post offices anywhere in Australia. [Named for the call of the black cockatoo. The name was ostensibly changed because there was a small community of the same name in Victoria but, by that reasoning, literally hundreds of Australian placenames would have required amendment. [The other recorded example of the cds, on KGV 1d, sold at the Prestige auction of 8.5.2013 for $333]
