1841 lengthy entire letter headed "Leschenault 15 June 1841" and signed "HM Ommaney" to his parents in Bedfordshire & endorsed "Pd 4d", British straight-line 'SHIPLETTER' h/s & London transit b/s of NO24NO/1841, light 'BEDFORD' arrival cds on the face obscured by docketing "Answered 3rd Decr 1841/with 3 Letters of Eliza and/[...] to go by/the Shepherd", minor blemishes. Sold at our auction of 26.6.2017 for $732.
The writer, Henry Mortlock Ommaney, arrived in -.8.1830 & in 1839 married Elizabeth Capel Bussell. He speaks of having moved to Leschenault, south of Perth near Bunbury, where the PO opened 15.7.1841 & "hired a house belonging to Mr Princeps of Calcutta...and stake my fortunes upon the success of this place......my government appointment becomes more irksome every day...as the summer approaches the Governor will again expect me to strap on my blanket and take up my residence in the bush" and "...It is perfectly astonishing what rapid strides every Sect makes in this Colony...here profess to hold all denominations on the same footing and give them all equal support...I took the mails up to...the Government Resident and as he was busy I opened them myself [!!]...here it is an obvious fact that money can be safely invested in land etc to immense advantage..."
