Large stockbook with an interesting array including cover fronts with unusual markings including 'DESPATCH BY MORNING TRAIN', 'CUSTOMS DUES/3½D/-2-' (paid with KGV ½d plus Postage Dues 1d & 2d), 'UNDELIVERABLE/RETURN TO SENDER' (1942 to Singapore & a different type on two large-part covers to Hong Kong) & 'POSTAL SERVICE SUSPENDED/RETURN TO SENDER' (1941 to China), 1950s passbook envelope, 1960s registered front with 'HMAS MELBOURNE' h/s on registration label, commercial & philatelic airmail covers, missent mail etc. Condition rather mixed but great value at the estimate. Box of covers & Postal Stationery including 1937 airmail to London with gorgeous advert for Exide Batteries, 1947 philatelic cover for first day of reduction of overseas airmail rates, 1954 airmail to GB with 1/- Lyre perf 'G/NSW', PTPO Envelopes including with advertising and municipal imprints, Registration Envelopes including 1913 4d Roo with boxed 'REGISTERED' CTO (superb!) & 'FIVE/PENCE' on Oval 4½d very fine unused etc, condition variable. Selection comprising 1916 registered to France with 3d Roo perf 'OS', 5d KGV & red Melbourne label; 1928 commercial to Belgium with 3d KGV & boxed 'POSTED/OUT OF/COURSE'; 1929 US Airmail Envelope to USA with 3d affixed over the US stamp which was then treated as not paid within the States & taxed; 1930 to GB with Sturt 3d block of 4 tied by Canberra City cds & h/s on 'EASTLAKES/NSW' [sic] registration label; and 1934 flight cover to Sudan with 'SUDAN AIR MAIL/JUBA' arrival b/s. 1913 usage of OHMS envelope (NSW "penalty" type) to Bohemia with rare franking of First Watermark 9d violet (piece missing at lower-right; undercatalogued at $500 on cover) tied by 'REGISTERED/SYDNEY NSW' cds, damaged red/black registration label, 'RADONITZ' arrival b/s.
1913-1940s covers mostly addressed to USA with Kangaroo frankings including 1913 Burnie (with illustration of Club Hotel) to American Consulate Sydney with 1d pair, solo frankings of 2½d x3 and 5d, KGV array including 1916-17 underpaid covers x7 with Postage Dues added, 1926 4½d Registration Envelope to France with 1½d added, plus other mundane covers including censored mail. Condition is extremely mixed. (Qty 50+)
1915 double-rate cover to Sweden with scarce franking of First Wmk 5d Roo tied by very fine strike of the scarce 'ENGLISH MAIL TPO/OUT/VICTORIA' cds, very fine 'Passed' h/s in violet applied at Adelaide (?), minor stain at left.
1915 Postmaster-General's Department OHMS cover to United States with scarce perf 'OS' franking of KGV ½d green & Second (?) Wmk 2d Roo tied by Melbourne cds of 18AU15, 'PASSED' h/s in violet, minor aging. [The Second Wmk 2d was issued in December 1914, while the Third Wmk 2d wasn't issued until November 1915. We expect that the Post Office would have used up stocks of the First Wmk 2d before April 1915]
1917 underpaid cover to Holland with KGV 1d red x2 only tied by 'MT MORGAN' (goldmining) cds, endorsed "TAX" in blue & "T40", Brisbane censor tape, Dutch 7½c & 12½c Postage Dues affixed & tied by 'ROERMOND' cds, boxed 'e.3.' postman's h/s in violet, minor defects.
1918 usage of KGV 4d Registration Envelope (on obsolete NSW stock with "star" in red), to Java correctly uprated with KGV Large Multiple Wmk ½d x3 tied by scarce 'TELEGRAPH OFFICE/GPO MELB' cds (ink clogging at base). Very pretty.
1918 cover to Tasmania with Smooth Paper 1d red Die II - Cat $150 on cover - tied by Melbourne Krag machine cancel with 'INVEST IN THE /7TH WAR LOAN' slogan, full panel advert in olive on the reverse for Thomas Evans Pty Ltd with illustration of crossed flags, opened-out for display.
1919 cover to "Mr Charles Chaplin/.../California" with KGV 1½d brown only tied by Hobart cds & Krag slogan cancel, superb '30/CTMS/T' h/s and 3-line '.../the postage rate from Australia to/America is 3d each ½ oz.' h/s unusually on the face, "Hollywood" added to address & US 'DEFICIENT/ADDRESS/...' h/s applied, postage due h/s & pre-cancelled Postage Due 3c pair affixed. [Very early movie star fan mail: Chaplin made his movies debut in 1914 & as early as 1916 was an established star]
1920 Western Australian Avis de Reception form with Third Wmk 2½d Kangaroo tied by fine 'REGISTERED PERTH' cds, pinholes through the stamp; and Avis de Reception card with 'ACKNOLEDGMENT' Error in the Heading, KGV ½d green & Third Wmk 2½d Kangaroo tied by oval 'REGISTERED/PERTH wa' d/s, 'KUNUNOPPIN/WESTN AUST' arrival cds. 1920 usage to Singleton of NSW Country Press Cooperative envelope with map illustration in blue, KGV 1½d brown tied by Sydney 'HELP REPATRIATION/BUY/WAR SAVING CERTIFICATES' slogan cancel, a very minor blemishes at upper-left. [Absent from Ray Kelly's collection]
1920 OHMS cover to the American Surgeon-General in Washington DC with perf 'OS' KGV Single Wmk ½d green & 5d chestnut tied by Melbourne cds, 'QUARANTINE SERVICE/Melbourne' imprint at lower-left, a couple of very minor faults.
1922 long OHMS registered cover to Mortlake with rare KGV franking of perf 'OS' ½d green & 4d violet (exceptional centring; Cat $900 on cover), Elizabeth Street (Vic) cds & red registration label, minor soiling & a tear above but not affecting the 4d stamp.
1929 philatelic usage of United States 5c Airmail Envelope to Ohio with Australian KGV 3d & 3d Airmail tied by machine cancels of both Perth & Chicago, mistakenly (?) endorsed "Insufficiently/Paid" in red. [It is thought that the US postal clerk misunderstood the regulations regarding pre-payment of the internal airmail fee with stamps of another country, being permissable]
1930 cover to England with KGV 1½d red attractively water-stained & with the stamp dislodged, very fine boxed 'DAMAGED BY FIRE/ON S.S. COMORIN.' h/s in violet on the face & another strike on British Post Office resealing label on the reverse. [Plus a PPC of the ship] (Qty 2)
1931 philatelic registered airmail usage of Colombia 4c Columbus Envelope to Colombia with Australian 1d 3d & 6d cancelled at Sydney and Colombian stamps cancelled on arrival at Barranquilla, various US transits.
