JAFFNA: 'JAFFNA/MR27/1860/=POST-NOT-PAID=' (Oxley #13; Proud #UP2; despite it being badly worn, the only recorded example) plus 'JAFFNA/=SHIP-LETTER=' (Oxley #16; Proud #SL1; LRD) oily strike in red in error & crossed-through - which slightly tore the paper - and again in black (a very fine strike) - both with the date in pen over the apparently "frozen" 'JU24/1846' - all on reverse of entire headed "Madras" to Mauritius "Per Nonpareil", '[crown]/MAURITIUS/=GPO=' arrival b/s. An exceptional combination of very rare markings. Ex Traill: sold for 121 (1990).

This appears to have been to Oxley the only known examples of all these markings. It is clear that Steamer Letter markings were used far more often than Ship Letter types. Proud records #SL1 from 1849 but that may be only one additional example.
