ADVERTISED & UNCLAIMED: 1886 cover from Victoria to "The Very Reverend/Julian E Tenison Woods/Brisbane" with Brisbane arrival b/s, 'NOT CALLED FOR' h/s, initials of more than 20 letter carriers, & boxed 'NOT KNOWN BY/LETTER CARRIERS' h/s, DLO b/s of 24AU/86 in red, 'ADVERTISED/AND/UNCLAIMED' h/s in red, finally with Melbourne DLO arrival b/s of DE28/86, minor soiling. An excellent combination of markings. Ex Bernie Beston: acquired at auction in 2006 for $1092. [Julian Edmund Tennison-Woods was a Catholic priest, educator, scientist & Fennian. He also bore a striking resemblance to Bernard Cumberbatch. Probably best known as co-founder, with St Mary McKillop, of the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart at Penola SA. For many years he conducted missions including in Queensland]

We know of only two other examples of this distinctive handstamp. [A remarkably fine 'damaged' article]

DAMAGED MAIL: 1906 much-travelled South Australian OHMS cover to Camooweal, redirected to "Invermay Stn/Via Wyndham" (probably missent to Wyndham NSW - b/s - instead of Wyndham WA), then to Townsville where the very rare 'RECEIVED TORN/TOWNSVILLE' h/s - the only recorded example - applied centrally on the face, 'UNCLAIMED' & 'NOT KNOWN BY/LETTER CARRIERS' h/s may also be of Townsville, eventually returned via the DLOs at Brisbane (cds of 27SE06) & Adelaide (OC5/06). In real estate parlance, "full of character" (= tragically distressed).

Ex Hugh Campbell - see his page 111 - & Richard Stevenson: acquired for SFr944; The Stevenson catalogue stated Campbell had a similar cover but it is clearly the same item. PO 1.7.1861; Joan Frew states Nullabin replaced by Knebworth 1.1.1864 but that is contradicted by this cover. [700km NNW of Brisbane]

An attractive & famous cover. Ex Hugh Campbell - illustrated at page 109: sold for $840 - who recorded only this & 1890s examples from Queensport & Wompah. [Millchester is about 1300km NNW of Brisbane & 5km SE of Charters Towers. PO 5.3.1873; closed 22.1.1917, as a result of declining fortunes on the goldfields]
