1899-1900 De La Rue Pictorials d 'LAKE MARION' imperforate colour trial in bright ultramarine with wide margin at left, large-part o.g.

This and the next twelve lots are all on unwatermarked wove paper. 68 separate colour trials were produced: each is unique, which causes us to believe that they are all die proofs, not plate proofs, reduced to stamp-size to enable the Agent-General to easily compare the trials for each denomination. All are illustrated in "The De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP. [John Bell's 6d in bright ultramarine sold at the Prestige auction of 12.6.2010 for $2300. Mac Clarke's large 2d die proof in crimson - not illustrated in the Walton book - sold at the Prestige auction of 17.10.2008 for $5520]

1899-1900 De La Rue Pictorials 3d 'SPRING RIVER PORT DAVEY' imperforate colour trial in dull violet with large margin at left, large-part o.g.

Fun fact: in the 1930s, Port Davey, a very early whaling station in Tasmania's SW Wilderness, was seriously considered as a Jewish Homeland!, an odd idea that had the backing of Robert Cosgrove, Tasmanian Premier 1939-58, except for a short period in 1948 when he stood down to be tried for bribery and acquitted. [You couldn't make up this stuff !]
